Fort Amherst is Britain's best surviving example of a Napoleonic Fortress. Its principal purpose was to protect the former Royal Dockyard at Chatham from a land-based attack. Comprising a large gatehouse, tunnel complex, ditches, magazines, barracks, and Civil Defence exhibition, the park-like setting within the fortifications, together with an 1815 re-enactment most summer Sundays, provides a fascinating visit for all the family.
