The Paranormal

Introduction to Haunting in Kent

Most people are intrigued by ghosts and stories about paranormal happenings even if they do not believe them. Kent has a wealth of sightings from the Grey Lady from the remote Cleve Court, near Minster in Thanet, to the multiple hauntings of the Pantiles area in modern Tunbridge Wells.

This section reveals other strange hauntings and mysteries too. How could Lord Lyttleton, who died just before midnight at his house near Epsom, appear at exactly the same time at the bedside of his friend, Miles Andrew, thirty miles away in Dartford? Why do so many people think they have had a fatal road accident at Blue Bell Hill, north of Maidstone?

Is the ghost, fondly known as Humphrey, who haunts the Theatre Royal, in Chatham, really that of a trapeze artist who bungled a performance in front King Edward VII and later hanged himself from the dress circle? Was it a poltergeist that caused so much damage over a two-year period to adjoining sheds on the Grove Park allotments, in Bromley? And, who is 'Sailor Sam' in his sou'wester and oilskins who regularly appears aboard Radio Caroline?

Can Dover Castle be called the most haunted place in Kent? Within its walls there have been sightings of, among others, an old woman and her dog, a man in a purple cloak, a woman with a long red dress, a drummer boy, a Roman soldier and a very agitated ghost who keeps repeating the name Helen!
